Calico and tortoiseshell cats are known for their stunning coats filled with orange, black, and sometimes white patches. Their colours look like living artwork, and many people notice something interesting about them. Almost every calico or tortoiseshell cat is female. This is not a coincidence. However, there is a rare exception. Some male cats are born with two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome (XXY). This condition is similar to Klinefelter syndrome in humans. These rare male cats can display calico or tortoiseshell colouring.
Male calico cats are estimated to occur in about 1 in 3,000 cats. Most of them are sterile and may have health challenges, which makes them even more uncommon.
Many people believe calico and tortoiseshell cats have strong personalities. Some describe them as bold, playful, or stubborn. This is often called “tortitude.” While personality depends more on environment and individual temperament, these cats are certainly memorable and full of character.
